Sunnyside church's 100th anniversary celebration to begin a week from Sunday

100 Years in God's Service" is the centennial theme of the Sunnyside Presbyterian Church.

The local church kicks off its 100th anniversary celebration a week from this coming Sunday. The Feb. 15 kickoff event will include a special guest speaker-Rev. Mark Dowdy of Olympia, who served the Sunnyside church from 1975 to '87.

Dowdy is scheduled to speak during the 9:30 a.m. worship service that morning.

Other important events marking the occasion during and after the Sunday morning service include musical entertainment, a skit highlighting the church's beginnings and a time for reminiscing Dowdy's time at the church. There will also be an all-church potluck.

The Sunnyside Presbyterian Church began as a community of believers in 1904, when the Articles of Incorporation were signed by the Washington secretary of state on Aug. 8 of that year. Since its start, the church has had 24 pastors fill its pulpit on Sunday mornings. Currently, the church's pastor is Rev. Katie Haney. She took on that role in August 2002.

The 100th anniversary celebration will continue throughout the year with more guest speakers, and will culminate the weekend of Aug. 7-8 with several final events.

The members of the church, located at 737 S. 16th St., invite all community residents to mark the beginning of the celebration with them on Sunday, Feb. 15.
