Greyhounds qualify one for Regionals

WEST RICHLAND - Nestor Soriano is the lone Grandview High School wrestler advancing to the Regional tournament this coming weekend at Sunnyside High School.

The good news for Greyhound wrestling fans, though, is that only two of the wrestlers on the very young Grandview squad failed to win a match this past weekend at the 3A Sub-regional tournament at Hanford High School.

The Greyhounds finished 10th from an 11-team field with 69.5 points. Sub-regionals was very much dominated by Clarkston, the No. 2 ranked 3A wrestling team in the State. Clarkston won the Sub-regional crown with a dominating 310 points. Mid-Valley League champion Ellensburg was second with 222.5 points. Cheney took third place honors with 176.5 points. Sunnyside was fourth with 173.5 points. The Greyhounds were just behind West Valley-Spokane, which was ninth with 73 points. Wapato rounded out the field with 42 points.

"They have a lot of kids," said Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny of Clarkston. "They have a quality program."

Sevigny said he was obviously disappointed by only advancing one wrestler to the Regional tournament, but still feels this past weekend's experience was a good one for Grandview.

Soriano was the top seed at 112 lbs. going into the Sub-regional tournament, earning a first-round bye. In his second round match, Soriano was paired with Drew Falon of West Valley-Yakima, taking the fall in 3:01. Soriano then was matched up with Sunnyside's Steve Sanchez, who was the No. 1 JV seed, in the semi-finals. Soriano let a late lead slip away as he lost 10-7 to Sanchez, who went on to win the weight class.

"That was a heck of a match," said Sevigny. "Nestor had it won. He relaxed too much."

Soriano then dropped into the consolation bracket, where he beat Ward Hobbs of Ellensburg by fall in 3:48. Soriano then destroyed Clarkston's Bryce Line in 56 seconds to take third place honors.

Andrew Morales, heavyweight, will serve as alternate to Regionals for the Greyhounds. Morales won his opening match against Hanford's Ben Gaston 7-0, but couldn't get past Stephon Westfall of Cheney in the next round. Morales went on to beat Alex Purcell of Clarkston in 2:29 to place fifth.

At 119 lbs., Grandview's Kaelan Nelson went 1-2 and didn't place.

Grandview's Max Saldana went 2-2 at 125 lbs. Saldana won his opening round match against Cody Edwards, but was in the same bracket as top seeded Manual Plata of Prosser. Saldana held his own against Plata, losing 13-4. Saldana dropped down to consolation, where he went 1-1 and was eliminated.

At 130 lbs., Grandview's Shay Seimears had a long weekend as he placed sixth. Seimears made it all the way to the semi-finals, where he lost to top seed Johnny Hurtado of Prosser by pin in 2:50. Seimears then lost 10-6 in the consolation bracket to Robert Martinez of Selah, whom he beat 5-4 in the opening round. Seimears dropped into the match for fifth and sixth place, losing to Dallin Grow of Ellensburg, 5-1. Sevigny said Seimears didn't wrestle badly, he just didn't fare well in the consolation bracket. Teammate Mathew Saldana was 0-2 at 130 lbs.

The first round started off promising for Grandview's Brian Naylor as he defeated Sunnyside's Juan Salinas by pin in 5:11. Naylor then ran into Clarkston's Mike McPeak, who placed third at State last year, losing in 1:32. McPeak went on to win the Sub-regional title at this weight class. Naylor then went 1-1 in the consolation bracket and was eliminated.

At 140 lbs., Grandview's Michael Benavidez went 2-2.

Jesus Soto defeated Selah's Johnny Garza in his opening match at 145 lbs., but couldn't get past Cheney's Tim Regnier. Soto then lost his consolation match.

At 152 lbs., Grandview's Tovias Magana looked strong in his opening round match against Ellensburg's Jordan Fallwell, winning via a 20-4 technical fall. Magana then lost to West Valley-Spokane's Joel Thomas and went 1-1 in the consolation bracket. Greyhound freshman Jacob Robillard was 0-2 at 152 lbs., but wrestled hard, said Sevigny.

Andrew Benavidez was 2-2 at 160 lbs. for the Greyhounds.

At 171 lbs., Grandview's Rodrigo Rodriguez was 1-2 and didn't place. Teammate Heleodoro Lopez was 1-2 at 189 lbs.
