Materials are being purchased and contracts are being awarded as part of the 2004 Dust Abatement Program in Yakima County begins getting ready for spring.
Tuesday morning Yakima County commissioners awarded a bid for two different types of dust abatement materials, and set a bid opening date for rental of the equipment needed to distribute the dust abatement materials.
Matt Pietrusiewicz, road maintenance manager for Yakima County, explained that this year the county awarded partial bids for abatement materials. He said county officials decided to take a look at an alternative material this year, however they still wanted to purchase the product they typically use for dust abatement.
Tuesday the commissioners awarded a $689,178 contract to Bell Marine Co. Inc. for 6,000 tons of lignin sulfonate, which is the material usually used by the county for dust abatement. A contract was also awarded to Envi Road L.L.C. for 210 tons of Earth Bind 100. The contract awarded to Envi Road L.L.C. was in the amount of $795,169.
Pietrusiewicz explained that the contract with Bell Marine only includes the price of the product itself, while the Envi Road contract includes the cost of the material, as well as delivery and application.
Pietrusiewicz said the dust abatement program is something Yakima County does in late spring and summer to keep dust down on gravel roads in the county.
Bids will be opened for the equipment rental portion of the dust abatement program Tuesday, March 2.
