The Port of Sunnyside reported Tuesday that 17 dead calves were dumped on Port property.
According to Port Financial Officer M'liss Bierlink, the calves are believed to have been dumped over the weekend. They were dumped in the same location, near the gate to the Sunnyside rendering plant off Midvale Road, where more than 50 dead animals were found a week ago.
The animals have been described as dairy calves.
"They didn't have any tags," said Bierlink.
It costs the Port District $3 per animal to dispose of the corpses. Bierlink said Port officials hope to thwart efforts of illegally dumping dead animals on public property.
She said the Port of Sunnyside will be putting up a fence near the site in question that will hopefully keep people from disposing of the animals illegally.
