Alejandro “Alex” H. Hernandez, 63, of Mabton died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born Oct. 27, 1940 in Edinburg, Texas, to Juaquin and Maria (Herrera) Hernandez. He received his early education in Texas. He later migrated from Texas to Washington and back for seasonal work. In September of 1962 he married Genoveva C. Cervantes in Grandview. Together they made their home in Mabton. He drove trucks for Simpson Brothers Farms for many years. He later purchased his own truck and hauled for Wycoff Farms in Grandview.

He is survived by one daughter, Nora Lynne Barrera and husband, Jose, of Grandview; three grandchildren; three brothers, Noe Hernandez and wife, Herminia, of Granger, Joaquin Hernandez and wife, Estella, of Orange Grove, Calif. and Samuel Hernandez of Yakima; and five sisters, Noemi Gonzalez and her late husband, Ramiro, Baudelia Alaniz and her late husband, Jesus, Maria Letticia Almaguer, all of Mabton, Oralia Gutierrez and husband, Santana, of Stevenson, Calif. and Elida Hernandez and husband, Alvaro, of Rome, Italy; and one sister-in-law, Hortencia Hernandez, wife, of the late Israel Hernandez, of Grandview.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Genoveva C. Hernandez; one son, Dave Hernandez; five brothers; and two sisters.

A memorial mass will be held at a later date. Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, is in charge of arrangements.
