S'side man dies in I-82 mishap

The new year has already brought with it a traffic fatality.

Yesterday, New Year's Day, 34-year-old Juan Leon Prieto of Sunnyside perished when the vehicle he was driving rolled along Interstate-82.

Washington State Patrol troopers report that Prieto was driving a 1988 Toyota pick-up truck in the eastbound lane of I-82 Thursday morning at about 8:30 a.m. WSP officials said Prieto lost control of his vehicle. It veered to the south side of the roadway and rolled, coming to rest on its wheels.

The I-82 accident occurred at about milepost 62.5. Prieto was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the mishap, according to WSP Trooper Brandon Karas.

Karas also reports that it was snowing yesterday morning when the freeway fatality occurred, and the roadway was covered with compact snow and ice.
