GRANDVIEW - The Sunnyside High School boys junior varsity basketball team pulled off a squeaker to start the new year.
The Grizzlies got by Grandview's JV 60-59 this past Saturday thanks in large part to the efforts of Greg Gilleland.
Gilleland dumped in 26 points and hit the game winning free throw with four-tenth's of a second left to give Sunnyside the win.
Sunnyside dominated the first half, said Grizzly JV Coach Glenn Braman. The Grizzlies led 33-24 at the break.
"We had all the momentum going into the half," said Braman.
The Greyhounds got back in the game with a 17-10 run in the third quarter, cutting Sunnyside's lead to one point going into the fourth quarter.
The Grizzlies were up by four points with less than a minute to go. But Sunnyside couldn't handle the defensive pressure of the Greyhounds and coughed the ball up three consecutive times. The Greyhounds tied the score with four seconds left. Gilleland then hit his game-winning free throw.
Danny Plesha finished with 10 points and Cris Guevara had 9 points in the Sunnyside win.
Ryan Engel led the Grizzlies with six rebounds. Guevara and Eric Crimp had four boards apiece.
Sunnyside's JV (6-0) is scheduled to play this Friday at Hanford and then Saturday at home against Ellensburg.
