Greyhounds race past Wapato boys

WAPATO - The Grandview High School boys basketball team proved to be just too efficient for the Wapato Wolves this past Saturday.

The Greyhounds rolled over Wapato, winning 68-40.

"They turned the ball over quite a bit," said Grandview Coach Scott Parrish.

Wapato had 24 turnovers to Grandview's 15. The Greyhounds converted the Wolves' turnovers into 28 points, which ultimately ended up being the difference in the game.

"We played well at both ends," said Parrish. "The kids worked pretty hard over Christmas break on our half-court offense."

The Greyhounds dominated the first half, taking a commanding 32-17 lead into the break. Grandview shot 13-of-31 from the field in the first half while the Wolves were 6-of-17. The Greyhounds ended up going 26-of-58 from the field for the game while Wapato was only 14-of-44 for the game.

It was evident Wapato was trying to play catch-up in the second half. The Wolfpack hit only 2-of-12 3-pointers in the final two quarters.

The Greyhounds also had a commanding showing on the boards, outrebounding Wapato 37 to 27, led by the nine rebounds pulled down by James Vela. Grandview had 22 defensive rebounds in the game.

Grandview also out did Wapato on second chance points, outscoring the Wolfpack 16 to 8 on the offensive glass.

Parrish said his Greyhounds found some success early in the first half by pounding the ball inside.

Parrish also had praise for the play of Vela Saturday night, who dropped in 14 points. Vela was one of three Greyhounds in double digits. Vela had nine rebounds, eight of which were defensive.

"He has been getting better every game," said Parrish.

Anthony Andrews put forth another solid night for Grandview, scoring a game-high 15 points, including going 3-of-5 from 3-point land.

Grandview (2-0, 7-1) will be looking to slow down West Valley this Tuesday night at home. The game was originally to be played this past Friday night, but was postponed because of the weather.

"Their (West Valley) defense is just shutting people down," said Parrish. I just hope we can be competitive. It is nice that it will be at home. Hopefully that will help us."
