Late surge not enough for Vikes

FINLEY - Too little too late for the Mabton High School boys basketball team in last night's non-league affair at 1A RiverView.

The Panthers built an early lead on a sluggish Vikings team and never looked back, besting Mabton 52-47.

"Defensively, we just didn't get it done," said Mabton Coach Brock Ledgerwood. "Offensively, we got a lot of good shots. We just didn't make the baskets."

Going up against a zone defense, the Vikings were held to the perimeter. Mabton shot just 32 percent from the field for the game and was only 4-for-24 from 3-point land.

"We didn't come out with any energy and we didn't play our game," Ledgerwood added.

The lack of energy by the Vikes was evident early on.

The Panthers outscored Mabton in the opening period 18-6, forcing the Vikes to play catch-up for the rest of the game. Ledgerwood said in the first quarter his players didn't challenge anything the Panthers put up on the glass.

"We were getting beat off the dribble," said Ledgerwood.

The Vikings managed to put together decent back-to-back quarters in the second and third periods. Mabton won the second quarter 14-13 and just lost the opening period of the second half 12-10.

Mabton, though, put together a decent run in the fourth quarter. The Vikings opened the fourth period down 43-30 and actually trailed by 15 points early in the fourth. Mabton outscored RiverView 17-9 in the fourth quarter and cut the lead down to four points late in the game. Ledgerwood said Mabton missed two golden opportunities with under a minute to play that would have pulled the Vikings to within a bucket.

Ledgerwood said Mabton didn't really start playing together as a team until there was about five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

"We weren't putting all the pieces together early in the game," said Ledgerwood. "(In the fourth quarter) we had all five guys pressuring them (RiverView)."

A.J. Valencia led Mabton in scoring with 17 points.

The Vikes (4-1, 6-4) resume league play this Friday at Glenwood.
