Thief snags car left idling, police capture Pasco man

A Sunnyside woman watched as her car was stolen from her home in the 300 block of South Eighth Street yesterday morning.

According to Sunnyside Police Captain Phil Schenck, the victim went out and started her 1991 Cadillac Deville and went back inside as it warmed up. The victim reported to police that she saw a white van pull up in front of her home and a man jumped out of the vehicle. He went over to the running car, jumped inside and took off down the road, according to police reports filed by the victim.

The Granger Police Department stopped the vehicle at the I-82 off ramp at VanBelle Road, according to Schenck.

The suspect, a 19-year-old Pasco man, was arrested and initially charged with taking a motor vehicle without permission. He has been taken to Yakima County Jail, where he awaits arraignment and formal charging.

This winter several cars that have been left unattended while warming up have been taken, according to Schenck.

"Don't leave cars running unattended," he said.
