Vikings remain undefeated in league

WHITE SWAN - The Mabton High School wrestling team looks to be gearing up for a showdown with Zillah for the South Central Athletic Conference west division league title.

The local 'B' schools combine with the 1A wrestling programs to form a league.

Mabton moved to 2-0 with a 47-18 thrashing of White Swan on the road last night. The Vikings are set to travel to Zillah on Jan. 29.

Mabton Coach Ron Rutz bumped all of his wrestlers up a weight class last night to better match up with the Cougars.

Mat action began last night at 125 lbs. Mabton's Victor Bustos pinned Jose Esquivel in 2:45. Rutz said Bustos, who hasn't wrestled in about two weeks, was kind of rusty in the first round, but rebounded well in the second period to get the pin.

Abel Barcenas followed up Bustos with a pin of White Swan's David Lemus in 3:20 in their 130 lb. encounter.

"Abel is wrestling real solid right now," said Rutz.

Rutz said this coming weekend's 12-team Royal Rumble tournament in Royal City is really going to show where Barcenas is as far as skills for the season.

Mabton teammates Alex Gutierrez, Marcos Zepeda and Javier Galvan won by forfeit at 135, 140 and 145 lbs., respectively, last night.

Jovanni Ochoa dropped his match at 152 lbs. to White Swan's best wrestler, Lupe Issaks, who returned this season to the Cougar line-up after wrestling for 2A Toppenish last year. Ochoa dropped the fall in 1:58.

Mabton's Cesar Macedo dominated Michael Fairbanks in their 160 lb. match, winning a major decision, 15-4.

Teammate Oswald Fonseca followed that performance up by wiping the mat with White Swan's Blaine Wheeler in the 171 lb. match. Fonseca won by technical fall in the third round, 17-2.

The Cougars won by forfeit at 189 lbs.

Freshman Robert Marquez scored all his points in the last two rounds to beat White Swan's Stanley Wentz 7-2 at 215 lbs. Rutz said Marquez looked solid against Wentz, who has been on varsity for White Swan for three years.

There was no match at 275 lbs. and the Vikes gave up a forfeit at 103 lbs.

Andy Torres of Mabton won his match against Darin Howard at 112 lbs. by pin in 3:24 in the last match of the night.

No match was held at 119 lbs.

The Vikings will be one of 12 teams competing in the Royal Rumble this Saturday at Royal City. The invite will feature four of the top 1A/B schools in the state in number one Warden, number three Colfax and number four Royal. Lake Roosevelt, another top 10 school, will also be competing.

"There are going to be some good teams there," said Rutz. "It is going to be a barometer of where we are at."
