Counterfeit $20 bill passed in Sunnyside
Watch out for fake bills. The Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce has sent out a chamber alert after a fake $20 bill was passed at Ace Hardware late last week.
The Sunnyside Police Department confiscated the fake money, which was taken by a clerk last Thursday night.
According to the chamber alert, police officials believe there is more counterfeit money around town.
Sunnyside Police Department Detective Scott Bailey said it is important to make sure bills $20 and higher have the safety strip in it and that the printing looks correct.
"Most of the higher bills have a multicolor number (of the bill denomination) in the corner," said Bailey.
He said another indicator to watch for when looking for counterfeit money is to make sure ink hasn't bled through the bill.
Although counterfeit money isn't common place in Sunnyside, especially since the issuance of the new $20s, $50s and $100s, Bailey said there are still fakes out there.
"We get them every once in a while but we haven't had a lot," he said.
Anyone who believes they have received a counterfeit bill can call the Sunnyside Police Department, 836-6200.
