This past Monday night, Sunnyside City Councilwoman Bengie Aguilar requested a discussion be held at the Feb. 2 Council meeting about giving city employees time off in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Currently, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the third Monday of each January, is not a recognized holiday by the City of Sunnyside. Employees do not get the day off from work because it has never been discussed in collective bargaining, said Deputy City Clerk Judie Essary.
Aguilar made the motion to discuss the city recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. Day after a recommendation from Juan Aguilar during the public comment portion of the Council meeting. During his comments, Juan Aguilar couldn't understand why the city didn't recognize the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr.
"I think it is a good idea," said Councilwoman Aguilar. "We should consider that."
