Grizzlies maul two 4A schools

The Sunnyside High School wrestling team hosted two 4A schools this past Saturday, Davis and Eisenhower, in an outing that more resembled practice for the Grizzlies.

Sunnyside pounded Davis 72-12 in the Grizzlies' first outing of the day. Sunnyside then whipped the Cadets 60-6 in a match that was highlighted by a battle at 145 lbs. between Ray Romero and Rickey Valadez, a defending 1A State champion.

Both matches started off at 152 lbs.

Sunnyside's Michael Graham received a forfeit against Davis. In his 152 lb. match against Eisenhower, Graham might as well have received a forfeit, pinning Jesus Acevedo in 1:10.

At 160 lbs., Sunnyside's Victor Moreno had two pins on the day. Moreno pinned Pirate wrestler Zach Myers in 1:28 and then beat Eisenhower's Karim Salazar in 1:00.

Joe Evans received a forfeit at 171 lbs. against Davis. Against Eisenhower, the Cadets moved Juan Pena up a weight, who entered the match with a 25-1 record. Evans won by injury default in the second round, leading 8-2 at the time. Evans is now 25-3 on the season.

At 189 lbs., Sunnyside's Carlos Padilla-Garza won twice. Padilla-Garza pinned Davis' Rudy Mondaca in 43 seconds. He then beat Eisenhower's A.J. Cruz in 3:47.

Gabe Lara won his match over Davis wrestler Terrell Perry in 33 seconds at 215 lbs. Lara then received a forfeit against Ike to move his record to 20-2 on the year.

Sunnyside heavyweight Pete Garza pinned Justin Smith of Davis in 1:11. Garza then won a 6-0 decision over Eisenhower's Kenny Heale.

Ricardo Rivera returned to the mat for the Grizzlies on Saturday at 103 lbs. Rivera needed 48 seconds to beat Tim Byre of Davis. Rivera then won a 4-1 decision over Junior Galindo of Ike.

Alex Valencia lost in 3:01 to Davis wrestler Freddie Sanchez, one of the Pirates' best wrestlers, said Sunnyside Coach George Paulus. In his match against Eisenhower, Valencia lost 8-3 to Nick Garcia.

Michael Christensen met another of Davis' top wrestlers, Dan Farias, in a 119-lb. match. Christensen lost by fall in 1:30. The Sunnyside grappler rebounded to take a 13-11 decision from Eisenhower's Kevin Kelley.

Sunnyside's Greg Burbidge had a nice day at 125 lbs. Burbidge pinned Axel Hausky of Davis in 1:02. Burbidge then beat his Eisenhower opponent in 2:42.

Eric Garcia won both his matches for the Grizzlies at 130 lbs. by forfeit.

Omar Magana won by forfeit against Davis at 135 lbs. Magana then pinned Eisenhower's Michael Castilleja in 1:30.

At 140 lbs., Sunnyside's Rudy Martinez won by pin against Davis wrestler Diego Arguello in 1:06. Martinez then lost a 6-3 decision to Ruben Ramos.

At 145 lbs., Ray Romero beat Davis wrestler Jorge Campos in 2:15. Romero then handed Valadez his first defeat of the season, 5-3 in overtime. Romero tied the match at 3-3 in the second period and rode out the Ike grappler in the third period. In overtime, Romero got the takedown 30 seconds into the extra period.

"It was a great match," said Paulus. "You could tell both guys knew what they were doing out there."

Sunnyside will host Prosser this Tuesday in a Mid-Valley League match before ending the regular season at Selah. The match against Prosser was postponed earlier this month because of the weather.
