The Sunnyside Christian Lady Knights took two long road trips this past weekend, but both of the bus rides proved to be well worth the trouble. The Lady Knights rode to victory both Friday and Saturday, Friday against Klickitat and Saturday against Lyle.
Saturday the Sunnyside Christian team beat Lyle 53-34, in a game that Lady Knights Coach Al Smeenk said ended a little closer than he thought it should have.
Smeenk said the Lady Knights were a little slow Saturday, which he attributes to the long bus ride the night before. He said the team didn't get home from Klickitat until after midnight.
"Still we were in control the whole time," Smeenk said.
He noted that the Lady Knights also managed to keep ahold of the ball, with only 13 turnovers against Lyle.
Scoring for the Sunnyside Christian team were junior Tyssyna Van Wingerden with 15 points, Hilary Hughes with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Tami Lambrecht with 11 points and sophomore Emma Hernandez with 9 points and seven rebounds.
Smeenk said overall the Lady Knights played well against Lyle.
"It was a ball game in which everyone had a chance to play," Smeenk said.
He said the few mistakes the Sunnyside Christian team did make against Lyle were most likely due to fatigue.
"It just took a little while to do some things," he said. "I think we were a little tired."
Tired from Friday night's game against Klickitat, which the Lady Knights won 56-30.
"It was just a good ball game," Smeenk said.
He said 12 Sunnyside girls had a chance to play during the match-up, including a couple of girls who were brought up from the junior varsity team.
Smeenk said the Lady Knights had 27 steals during the game, with six coming from Hughes and five from sophomore Courtney Rice.
Smeenk said the team's lead girls played very well Friday, and noted that the team only had 15 turnovers against Klickitat.
Going into the game, Smeenk said he was confident the girls could win, noting that Klickitat isn't as strong this year as it has been in the past.
Leading scorers for the Lady Knights Friday were Van Wingerden with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Hernandez with 15 points.
The Lady Knights (6-1, 9-5) will take to the court again Tuesday in Toppenish at the Yakama Tribal School.
