ZILLAH - Going into last night's match, the Mabton High School wrestling team still had a shot at catching Zillah for the South Central Athletic Conference west division league title.
But giving up four forfeits off the bat put the Vikings in a hole to the Leopards they couldn't get out of.
Zillah secured the league title with a 49-21 victory over Mabton.
"We had too many forfeits," said Mabton Coach Ron Rutz. "The kids knew their backs would be against the wall last night. But, they wrestled hard."
The Vikings started the night by forfeiting at 125 lbs.
Mabton's Alex Gutierrez won a huge match in regards to postseason seeding at 130 lbs. Gutierrez decisioned Zillah's Rudy Guzman 7-6 in two overtimes. Guzman was unable to hold on to Gutierrez in the second overtime, which saw the Viking grappler needing just 10 seconds to escape from the down position.
"That was a match," said Rutz. "Alex's conditioning just paid off."
