Niemeyer second at Safeco contest

SEATTLE - Tyler Niemeyer, 12, of Sunnyside placed second this past Sunday at the Pepsi Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Team Championship.

The June 27 competition was staged at the Seattle Mariners' Safeco Field.

Niemeyer qualified to compete at Safeco Field by placing first in his age division at the sectional event, held in mid-May in Sunnyside.

The Pepsi pitch, hit and run contest is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. The grassroots program is in its eighth year of existence and is designed to provide youths with an integrated competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills.

The final level of competition this summer concludes at the 2004 All-Star game in Houston. The top four competitors nationwide from each of the four age groups will advance to the national finals during Major League Baseball All-Star week.
