The Sunnyside High School fastpitch softball girls team is still undefeated (13-0-1) in summer league play.
The Sunnyside squad overpowered Kiona-Benton this past Wednesday evening at home in a twin bill. Both games of the doubleheader went three innings because of time constraints.
In the first game, Sunnyside pounded Ki-Be 16-1. The Lady Grizzlies scored six runs in the first inning and 10 runs in the second.
"We were just patient at the plate," said Sunnyside Coach Ralph Mendoza. "We were making good contact when we hit the ball."
Devina Martinez paced the Lady Grizzlies, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Samantha Taylor, Marina Martinez, Victoria Solis and Crystal Soto each had one hit in the game.
Erica Garcia tossed a one-hitter for Sunnyside.
Sunnyside was as equally successful in the second game, winning 11-1. The Lady Grizzlies opened up with a five-run first inning and then put back-to-back three-run frames together to finish the game.
Solis, Taylor and Devina Martinez each had a hit.
Viri Pasillas tossed a two-hitter while fanning six.
Sunnyside will have its last game of the summer season this coming Monday night against Zillah. The game will be played at the fields near Washington Elementary School at 5 p.m.
