National Night Out planning begins

Plans are now underway for this year's National Night Out (NNO) celebration to be held Aug. 2 and 3, in Sunnyside.

According to Chico Rodriguez of the Sunnyside Police Department, Sunnyside will be host to the Lower Valley NNO kickoff event to be held at the Sunnyside Law and Justice Center.

"City government and law enforcement representatives, as well as social service agencies will be on hand to greet the public," Rodriguez said. The kick-off barbecue and ceremonies will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on the lawns at the Law and Justice center.

He said the kick-off will be followed by neighborhood block parties on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

"We are now asking neighbors to call in to register their block parties, " Rodriguez said.

The block parties, to be held from 6 to 9 p.m., give neighbors a chance to get acquainted, socialize and share ideas for keeping their neighborhoods free of crime and drugs, he explained.

People interested in learning how to organize a block party are encouraged to attend a meeting Wednesday, July 14, at the Law and Justice Center at 5 p.m.
