25-year-old arrested after mall confrontation

Javier Cervantes Trejo, 25, was arrested by the Sunnyside Police Department July 4, and initially charged with assault in the second degree and for possessing a stolen firearm.

Trejo was arrested after allegedly showing a gun to another motorist in the parking lot of the Mid-Valley Mall at 2010 Yakima Valley Hwy. in Sunnyside.

According to the Sunnyside Police Department, an officer was dispatched after a report came in of a confrontation taking place in the parking lot of the mall. When police arrived, Trejo reportedly ran through the parking lot and was apprehended near the Radio Shack store.

After taking Trejo into custody, the officer searched the suspect's vehicle and found a Smith and Wesson .45 caliber, semi-automatic pistol in the glove box. According to the local police department, it was later discovered that the gun had been reported stolen from Salem, Ore.

The Sunnyside Police Department notified the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms about the incident.

Yakima County Prosecutor's Office was contacted this morning, but the no one was available for comment on the case.
