PENDLETON, ORE. - Buzz Blake of Prosser, representing Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course, scored a third place finish this past Monday at a PGA pro-am event staged at the Pendleton Country Club.
Competing in amateur division #1, Blake netted a handicap-aided 68 for his third place finish in the net scoring column.
Blake also was on the fourth place squad in the team competition. He, along with Bud Schatz, Pete Veliz, Russ Pond and Black Rock Creek PGA head pro Jeff Bender shot an aggregate 191. The fivesome was seven strokes back of the winning team from Horn Rapids Golf Course.
A second squad from Black Rock Creek earned fifth place honors in the team competition, firing a 192. The team was comprised of Bender, Robbie Goins, Geoff Bowlsby, Kelly Hector and Scott Andrews.
Monday's tourney drew a field of 122 professional and amateur golfers. It was the third of five pro-am tournaments that comprise the Michelob Pro-Am Series, sponsored by the Central Washington chapter of the PGA.
Other Black Rock Creek golfers who placed and earned pro shop credit included Veliz, third in amateur division #2 net with a handicap-aided 69; Bowlsby, fourth in amateur division #3 gross with an 87; and Jack Kellum and Chuck Stegeman, fourth place tie in amateur division #3 net with handicap-aided 70's.
Stegeman also picked up bonus pro shop credit by nailing down KP honors for amateur division #3 golfers.
The only other Lower Yakima Valley golfer to cash at Monday's tourney was Mt. Adams Country Club amateur Bob Greene, who placed third in amateur division #1 with a two-over 74.
The low amateur round carded Monday was an even-par 72, shot by Howard Headley of the host Pendleton Country Club.
Mike Kasch Jr. of Eagle View Golf Course posted the low professional round, an eight-under 64. Bender finished one shot out of the money in the professional division with his one-under 71.
