Maciel held on $500,000 bail in Shifflett death

Gerardo R. Maciel, 43, of Toppenish, the alleged driver of the van that last Friday evening struck and killed a bicyclist, 54-year-old Sunnyside resident Ronnie Shifflett, is scheduled to be arraigned in Yakima County Superior Court this morning (Wednesday).

Maciel had a preliminary hearing Monday, when his bail was set at $500,000. His official charges will be listed in the arraignment, but he has initially been charged with vehicular/negligent homicide for his role in the crash Friday night. Maciel would have to post 10 percent of the bail to be released from jail. He remains in Yakima County Jail.

According to Washington State Patrol officials, Maciel was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of North Avenue when he struck Shifflett, who was traveling west on his bicycle on the same street.

The crash occurred near Rohman Street, which is where the local Washington State Patrol office is located.

Sunnyside police officials requested the Washington State Patrol investigate the crash.

State Patrol Detective Jody McMullen said the case is still under investigation.

Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney Howard Hansen has been assigned to the case.
