Wednesday afternoon, the Sunnyside Fire Department responded to a fire that displaced a family in the Sunnyside Housing Authority housing complex at 1520 S. Sixth St. in Sunnyside.
Sunnyside Fire Chief Jim Stanton said the fire started in the utility room of one of the units. He noted that the fire was contained to the utility room, though there is heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the apartment. He said the fire only affected the one apartment unit.
Stanton said the fire department is investigating the cause of the fire and noted that although heavy heat and smoke damage was done to the housing unit, a damage estimate has yet to be calculated.
According to Stanton, the family living in the housing unit was displaced by the fire and is currently being assisted by the American Red Cross.
