Five sisters sustain injuries in mishap

An attempt to avoid an animal that ran across the path of the vehicle they were riding in last Friday evening resulted in five Sunnyside sisters sustaining injuries.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Christina Ozuna Sanchez was driving a 2000 Dodge Stratus eastbound on Van Belle Road last Friday at about 6:40 p.m. WSP troopers said Sanchez reported seeing an unknown type animal cross the roadway in front of the vehicle, near the intersection of Van Belle and Chute roads. Sanchez apparently tried to avoid the animal, but lost control of the vehicle.

The Dodge Stratus ended up veering off the right side of the roadway, flew over an embankment into a hay field and struck a water wier box.

Injured along with the 26-year-old Sanchez were her four sisters-Noelia Vargas, 43; Becky Vargas, 21; Gloria Vargas, 15; and Victoria Vargas, 19. All are Sunnyside residents.

WSP troopers said all five females were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The Dodge Stratus was totaled.
