Shooting investigation still hanging in the balance

Sunnyside Police Department investigators are waiting to see whether two men involved in a shooting last Thursday evening live before they announce what charges will be filed against the men.

"We believe we know who shot first," said Capt. Phil Schenck of the Sunnyside Police Department.

At this time, he said, charges are dependent on whether or not the men involved live.

Currently, both Jose M. Solano, 47, and Jose Espindola, 29, are in the Harborview Medical Center intensive care unit in serious condition.

The two men shot each other multiple times Thursday, June 10, at an apartment building located in the 700 block of Cemetery Road.

According to police, Espindola was at his family's home in the 700 block of Cemetery Road when Solano arrived. The men immediately began to argue, said Schenck. Then each of them pulled out a handgun and fired on the other. Schenck said one man was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and the other with a large caliber revolver. Both men were intoxicated at the time.

Schenck said they hope to interview the two men regarding the incident. He said interviewing the men will help them nail down the motive for the shootings.
