Four Mabtonites perish in car crash

Four Mabton residents were killed Sunday, June 20, when their vehicle struck an elk.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Jesus P. Reyna, 26, of Mabton was driving a 1997 Honda westbound on I-90 at milepost 38, near North Bend, when the vehicle struck an elk. The elk was in the second lane of travel, which is the lane in which Reyna's car was traveling. The vehicle veered off the roadway into the grass median. It traveled more than 1,000 feet before it vaulted onto Garcia Road from the median. The vehicle came to rest on the road on its top. In the accident, one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle.

Reyna was killed in the accident, as was an unknown 18-year-old Mabton woman. Reyna and the unknown woman were the only ones wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Also killed was Enrique Gonzalez-Reyna, 19, of Mabton and Rafael S. Gonzalez, 42, of Mabton.

Reynaldo Gonzalez, 20, of Mabton was injured in the crash. His condition is unknown at this time.
