Efficiency highlights Sun Valley outing

SELAH - Efficiency might be the best word to describe last night's outing under the lights for the Sun Valley 16-18-year-old baseball team.

Sun Valley never really had any problems in its 6-3 victory over Selah last night.

Joel Zakahi had a strong performance in a complete game outing despite giving up four walks and hitting one batter. Zakahi fanned five and scattered six hits.

"Joel was much more efficient when he got ahead in the count," said Sun Valley Coach Dave Martinez.

A hit Selah batter in the first inning came around to score on Zakahi. Selah plated a run in the third inning. Selah added its final run in the fourth inning when one of the two walks Zakahi gave up scored.

Sun Valley scored in the third inning when Cole Boboth hit into a groundout to score Jessie Ramirez.

A three-run fourth inning helped set the tone for Sun Valley. Chris Newberry, who went 4-for-4 at the plate, singled to start the inning. Derek Uberuaga then scored Newberry off a triple and came in following a single by Eric Crimp. With two outs, Zakahi hit a ball up the middle to plate Timmy Briones.

Sun Valley also had a pair of runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.

Martinez said it was the little things that his team did right last night that propelled Sun Valley to victory. He cited the third inning, when Boboth and Zakahi, who had moved Ramirez into scoring position after a sac fly, executed plays to score a run. Martinez was also pleased with the defensive effort of his team, which committed only one error.

Martinez was also happy with the nine-hit performance by Sun Valley. Martinez said Newberry, Uberuaga and Crimp, whom combined to go 7-for-11 at the plate, are seeing the ball very well right now.

Sun Valley (9-4) opens up the four-day West Valley tournament on Thursday with a 1 p.m. game against host West Valley. There are eight teams in the West Valley tournament, which will be held at West Valley High School.
