Tuesday pizza sales to benefit memorial fund

Josie Alvarez's co-workers will be working harder than ever to sell lots of pizzas tomorrow night.

Tuesday, June 29, between the hours of 4 and 9 p.m., all pizzas ordered for carry-out, delivery or dining-in at the Grandview and Sunnyside Pizza Huts will help fund a memorial for the former Mabton woman.

The fund is being established in memory of Alvarez, a 25-year-old wife and mother of two children, according to her former employer, Noe Mejia, manager of the Sunnyside Pizza Hut.

The popular shift manager at the Grandview Pizza Hut was killed in a one-vehicle accident near North Bend Sunday, June 20. Alvarez, who has been employed by the Pizza Hut company for the past two years, died of injuries she sustained when the car she was riding in with her husband, Jesus Reyna, stuck an elk. Two members of her family, Enriquez Gonzalez-Reyna and Rafael S. Gonzalez, all of Mabton, also perished in the accident.

"We wanted to do something to help her family," said Mejia.

"So we will be donating 20 percent of the profits from the sale of pizzas sold at our restaurants in Grandview and Sunnyside to Alvarez's family memorial fund," said Mejia.

Alvarez, who began her career with the pizza company as a cook, quickly advanced to shift manager at the Sunnyside Pizza Hut before transferring to the Grandview Pizza Hut, Mejia explained.

Maria Morales, the store manager of the Grandview Pizza Hut, and Mejia asked the national pizza company for permission to donate a portion of their pizza sales to the family's memorial fund, Mejia said.

"We understand that other stores in our division may also be holding fund-raisers for her fund," he added.

"Josie was a reliable and valued employee and she was well liked by her fellow crew members," he said.

Alvarez's former co-workers held a car wash Saturday at the Sunnyside Arby's restaurant to benefit her children.

"All of the proceeds from the car wash and Tuesday's sales will be donated to the Gonzalez/Reyna memorial fund, which has been established at the Mabton branch of the American West Bank. Donations will also be accepted at the Sunnyside branch of American West Bank.

Additional donations will be accepted during Tuesday's fund-raiser.
