Sunnyside runner selling bulbs for travel cash

Sunnyside's fastest female runner has swapped her running shoes for dress shoes in order to raise some much needed cash.

Isley Gonzalez, a 3A State track high school running champion, is planning to use any profits from her entrepreneurship efforts to fund a trip to Arcadia, Calif., where she has been invited to run.

Gonzalez will participate in the Arcadia Invite, one of the largest and most prestigious high school meets in the nation, according to Robin Bryson, Gonzalez's track coach.

Gonzalez, who has had a stellar high school career in cross country and track and field running events, will run in a night race on April 10, during the southern California event.

In order to be invited to the prestigious high school meet, Gonzalez had to set qualifying times, a task which proved a breeze for the young woman.

Just two weeks ago, she established the necessary time during a invitational held at the University of Washington, where she ran the 1,600 meter event with an indoor time of 5:10. She said her best outdoor time is 5:08.

"The Arcadia meet is one of the elite meets in the nation This is a tremendous opportunity for Isley," said her coach, who has worked with the young runner for the past two years.

Last week, the Sunnyside School Board approval a travel request from Bryson and Gonzalez, but Gonzalez said she needs extra money to cover expenses.

"So, I'm taking orders for Van Bourgondien Dutch bulbs in order to raise airfare and hotel expenses," said the petite SHS senior. She said the bulbs will be available for planting soon upon arrival. She is circulating a flyer for the bulb sales, but anyone wishing to make an order may call her at 837-8173.
