Linde, Gonzalez, Van de Graaf nab first place finishes for Lady Grizzlies

YAKIMA - The Cadet Invitational this past Saturday proved to be a good venue for the Sunnyside High School girls track and field team.

The Cadet Invitational, hosted by Eisenhower High School, featured such teams as Wapato, Thorp, Bickleton, Moses Lake and Kittitas. Saturday's Cadet invite was non-scoring.

"Overall, it was a great meet with some good marks," said Sunnyside Coach Robin Bryson.

Christy Linde and Isley Gonzalez, who just committed this past weekend to the women's cross country and track and field programs at Washington State University, each had a pair of first place finishes.

Linde took top honors in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.53 seconds, and the triple jump, clearing 31-6.

Gonzalez won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.38. Gonzalez also claimed top honors in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:24.11.

Bryson was very pleased with the performances of both Linde and Gonzalez. She said the two Lady Grizzlies are picking up right where they left off from last season.

Another Sunnyside runner Bryson felt had a good day was Hilary Van de Graaf, who claimed top honors in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.65. Van de Graaf also took third place in the triple jump, clearing 29-0.5.

Sunnyside's 4X100-meter relay team also took first place honors on Saturday. The team, consisting of Van de Graaf, Melissa Caballero, Daniela Rivera and Caity Robert, took top honors with a clocking of 43.4 seconds. Sunnyside also had a second team in the 4X100-meter relay. Fatima Ruelas, Buffy Hernandez, Andrea Arevalo and Kerri Urrutia took fifth place with a time of 56.60 seconds.

Robert took second place in the 100 meters with a time of 14.01 seconds. Rivera and Ruelas were third and fourth in the 100 with times of 14.04 seconds and 14.25, respectively.

Bethany Dahlstrom had a respectable third place finish in the javelin with a throw of 94-3-3/4.

"She is throwing much more consistent," said Bryson.

Bryson said Dahlstrom has been throwing in the mid-90s for the past two weeks in the javelin.

Kerri Urrutia took third in the 100-meter hurdles with a clocking of 18.91 seconds.

Cassie Jolliff had two fourth place finishes on Saturday for Sunnyside. Jolliff was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:45.26. She was also fourth in the pole vault, clearing 8-0, which Bryson said was a personal best for Jolliff.

Ruelas had the top time for the Lady Grizzlies in the 200 meters, taking third with a clocking of 28.92. Rivera followed in fourth with a time of 29.02. Robert finished fifth for Sunnyside with a time of 29.56 and teammate Andrea Arevalo was sixth with a time of 29.72.

Sunnyside travels to Hanford this Friday.
