The Sunnyside High School girls golf team's first Mid-Valley League match is still three weeks away. With two invitationals already under their belt, and two more scheduled before conference play begins, the Lady Grizzlies are using the early part of the season to hone their games.
The Sunnyside squad's most recent non-league outing came yesterday (Monday) at the Moses Lake Invitational. Playing a two-person best ball format, Jensie Hernandez and Megan Downing carded a 94 (47-47) at Moses Pointe. Sunnyside's other duo-Heidi Southern and Christine Kim-teamed for a 105.
Team scores from yesterday's invite in Moses Lake were unavailable this morning.
The Lady Grizzlies officially opened the season last Friday at the West Richland Invitational. Competing against more than 20 teams, Sunnyside tied for a 16th place finish with Kamiakin, as both teams tallied a 341. Gonzaga Prep of Spokane won the team title at the West Richland municipal course with a score of 242.
Team scores at West Richland were computed by using the two low 18-hole individual rounds and the two low nine-hole rounds.
Hernandez had the low 18-hole round for Sunnyside, posting a 103. Southern was one stroke back with a 104. The low nine-hole round for the Lady Grizzlies was turned in by Downing-a 59. Kim shot a 75 for nine holes of play.
The 18-hole medalist at West Richland was Richland's Molly Lindbloom, who carded a two-over 73.
The Sunnyside linksters are scheduled to compete at the Othello Invitational this coming Friday, and will then travel to play at the Pasco Invitational next Monday, March 29. The Lady Grizzlies, under the direction of first year Coach Gary Rohde, will then be out of action until they travel to Horn Rapids Golf Course on Monday, April 12, when they open league play against Grandview and Hanford.
