MABTON - Mabton High School's standout athletes from the recently concluded winter season were honored last Thursday at the annual winter awards banquet.
For boys varsity basketball, A.J. Valencia and Alex Zavala were recognized for being named to the South Central 'B' all-league team. Ricardo Huecias was the recipient of the Viking Basketball Award, and he along with Andy Cervantes and Frankie Mariscal were presented captain's awards.
Also for the boys varsity hoopsters, Pedro Huecias was named "Mr. Defense," Andy Rodriguez was designated most outstanding player and Ryan Harris received the most improved player award.
Gatorade awards were given to Ricardo Huecias (Will to Win), Valencia (Rookie of the Year) and Zavala (Player of the Year).
For the Viking JV boys basketball team, Pablo Sanchez, Marco Pineda and Ozzie Medina were named winners of the captain's awards. The captain's award winners on the boys 'C' squad were Tommy Bonewell and Enrique Huecias.
The three Gatorade award winners for the Lady Viking varsity hoopsters were Erica Sanchez (Rookie of the Year), Michelle Tellez (Player of the Year) and Alida Mendoza (Will to Win).
Betsy Fisher collected the girls varsity most valuable person and co-captain awards, and Gloria Vijil earned the co-captain and coaches awards. Tellez was named "Ms. Defense," and Diana Lopez was honored as "Most Inspirational." Tellez was also recognized as an all-league selection, and Lady Viking Coach Brett Simpson was honored for being named the 'B' league coach of the year.
JV girls basketball award winners included Talisa Sotelo as Ms. Defense, Sophie Beltran as most inspirational and Laura Martinez as most improved.
For the Viking wrestling team, Alex Gutierrez was presented the captain and most improved awards, and Javier Galvan won the scholar/athlete award.
Drill team honors went to Kayla Campbell (co-captain) and Michelle Tellez (co-captain).
Cheerleader awards were presented to Victoria Tellez (co-captain), Jesica Orozco (co-captain), Yadira Calzada (most improved), Adriana Navarro (punctuality) and Zuleyma Orellano (most positive).
Outstanding scholastic awards (3.5 - 4.0 GPA) were presented to Diana Nunez, Laura Martinez, Alida Mendoza and Betsy Fisher. Distinguished scholastic awards (3.00 - 3.49 GPA) were presented to Josie Chase, Talisa Sotelo, Lupita Gomez, Erica Sanchez, Gloria Vijil, Regina Palomarez, Diana Lopez and Michelle Tellez.
