YAKIMA - Playing a strong West Valley tennis team, Sunnyside Tennis Coach Troy Whittle chose to put some of his stronger players in doubles competition.
But No. 2 doubles partners Ericka Mendez and Lizeth Chiprez brought home the only win for the Lady Grizzlies at Tuesday's match. They defeated Ashley Hood and Kari Blankenship 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Whittle said the girls started the match trying to match their opponents' game. After losing the first set Mendez and Chiprez played on their strengths, winning the next two sets, said Whittle.
He added that #1 doubles pair Andrea Phillips and Dolores Gomez of Sunnyside lost a close match against Alisha Brown and Alicia Harris 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2.
"They could have won it," said Whittle.
On the bright side, Whittle said Phillips and Gomez played Sunnyside's seventh tie breaker set of the year and it was the first one the team has won.
No. 3 doubles players Deann Trautman and Jerika Martinez of Sunnyside lost to Heather Hickman and Corinne Hahn 6-1, 6-3.
In singles play, No. 1 seeded Lana Pangle of Sunnyside lost to Brook Foster 6-0, 6-0.
West Valley's Sarah Cooper defeated Victoria Garza 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 singles play.
"Garza fought for a lot of points and it just didn't work out," said Whittle.
He added that the Sunnyside team was competitive in the matches. "We're not getting blown out," he added. "They're trying and that's what's important. The team is still young this year."
