Four Grizzlies nab second place finishes

WEST RICHLAND - Cody Heckert, Joe Schwartz, Luke Schilperoort and Branimir Janjev posted the top marks for the Sunnyside High School boys track and field team this past Friday night at Hanford.

The Grizzlies took part in the non-scoring Falcon meet on Friday night, which included Kiona-Benton and Wahluke.

Heckert took runner-up honors in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:13, which is a personal best. Heckert also set PRs in the triple jump, clearing 36-2 to place third. He also hit 17-0 in the long jump, but failed to place.

Schwartz continues to improve in the shotput for the Grizzlies. Schwartz set a personal best in the shot with a throw of 46-8-1/4 to finish second. Schwartz was also third in the discus, clearing 112-10. He also placed sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.4 seconds.

Schilperoort nabbed a second place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.9 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Schilperoort took third with a time of 11.9 seconds.

Janjev took second in the triple jump, setting a personal best while clearing 36-4-1/2. He set another PR in the high jump, elevating 5-2 to tie for fifth place. Janjev also had a PR in the long jump, clearing 17-1, but didn't place.

Brendan Scott was third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:01. Scott was also on a 4X400-meter relay team with Nick Howat, Heckert and Lester Smith that placed third with a time of 3:49.7.

The Grizzlies 4X100-meter relay team of Smith, Jaime Sambrano, Schilperoort and Schwartz finished third with a time of 46.7 seconds.

Michael Graham set a personal best in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.6 seconds to place fifth. Graham was also sixth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 49.4 seconds.

Smith was seventh in the 100-meter dash with a clocking of 12.5 seconds.

Mitchell Sanchez took eighth place honors in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:27.

Joel Gaspar was ninth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:25.

Cipriano Meraz was 10th in the 800-meter dash with a clocking of 2:33.
