Lady Vikings stay ahead of visiting Vandals

MABTON - Saturday, the Mabton High School girls' fastpitch team was consistent, showing good hitting and pitching skills all afternoon against the visiting Klickitat team.

The doubleheader against the Klickitat Vandals ended in a double victory for the Lady Vikings. The Mabton team won the first game 17-16 and rallied back to win the second game 18-4.

"The girls did a great job on defense," said Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita. "The pitching was excellent, too."

Sustaita said the girls worked all week long on fundamentals and it showed during the two Klickitat games. Sustaita said there were fewer errors in both games, and the team's hitting was on target.

Although the Lady Vikings were able to win both games against the Lady Vandals, the first victory wasn't imminent. At one point during the first game the Mabton team was trailing 9-3 in the fourth inning.

"Our girls rallied back to beat them," Sustaita said. "They never gave up."

And it was that attitude that helped the Lady Vikings push themselves ahead and ultimately come out on top. Sustaita said in the middle of the game the team started connecting at the plate.

"We started hitting a lot better," he said.

When it came time to play the second game of the afternoon against Klickitat, Sustaita said his team was still hot from the first game.

"We just started off hot and kept going from there," he said.

Sustaita said during the second match-up the team was able to get a lot of girls on base, as well as a lot of girls hitting the ball, which allowed people to score.

Sustaita said Gloria Vijil did a great job for the team Saturday, who was 7-for-8 overall. In the infield, Sustaita said Michelle Tellez was working hard, turning three double plays on her own.

"She sparked the team in the infield," Sustaita said.

The Lady Vikings will take to the field again tomorrow, Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m. against Granger.
