PASCO - Playing a scramble format at yesterday's Pasco Invitational, Sunnyside's Jensie Hernandez and Megan Downing tied for top honors.
The Lady Grizzly duo worked their way around Pasco's Sun Willows Golf Course in fine fashion, carding an invite low 89. The two Sunnyside High School golfers tied for top honors with Eisenhower's Nicole Enslow and Rachel Murphy. Enslow and Murphy were afforded the first place finish, though, based on the tournament tiebreaker formula.
"In the tiebreaker, they looked at which team had the lowest score on the No. 1 ranked handicap hole," said Sunnyside Coach Gary Rohde. "Jensie and Megan took a six on that hole, and the Eisenhower girls scored a five, so they won the tiebreaker."
Sunnyside's Heidi Southern and Christine Kim also fared well at the Pasco Invite Monday afternoon. The two ended up with fourth place honors in the scramble portion of the tourney, posting a 92.
The tourney format called for each of the nine schools to enter two golfers in a Scotch ball competition, two golfers in a Chapman contest and two golfers in a scramble competition. Rohde, with only four golfers at his disposal, opted to send his two two-girl teams out to play the scramble portion of the tournament. When the final tabulations were complete, the Lady Grizzlies ended up with a seventh place team finish. Class 4A Richland won the team title.
The SHS girls golf team also competed at the Othello Invitational last Friday. Each of the 13 schools had two golfers play 18 holes and two shoot just nine holes. The Lady Grizzlies finished in ninth place from the 13-school field, tallying a combined 388 strokes. Hanford won the team title at Othello witha score of 275.
Southern had the low 18-hole round for the Lady Grizzlies at Othello, shooting a 114 (56-58). Hernandez posted a 132 on front and back nine scores of 66-66. Downing and Kim recorded a 62 and 80, respectively, in the nine-hole contest.
The medalist at Othello was Molly Jensen of Hanford (89).
Rohde said the larger numbers posted at Othello were due in large part to the cold and windy weather conditions that day.
The SHS girls golf team is out of action until April 12, when it travels to Horn Rapids Golf Course to open league play against Grandview and Hanford.
