Tuesday morning, Yakima County commissioners approved an agreement that temporarily extended a franchise agreement between the county and Charter Communications.
The franchise agreement allows the utility company to operate, maintain and construct transmission lines and distribution systems along, under and over county roads.
Mark Cleaver, Yakima County project development engineer, explained that the contract was only temporarily extended because the county and Charter Communications are still negotiating the new agreement. Cleaver said franchise agreements, like the one with Charter, are typically 25 years long.
The original franchise agreement between the county and Charter Communications expired on Dec. 21, 2003, at which point it was extended through March 31. The resolution approved by county commissioners extends the agreement another month, through April 30.
