WEST VALLEY - Richland's Molly Lindbloom paced a select group of golfers representing six high schools at a special competition staged at Apple Tree Golf Course yesterday afternoon. Lindbloom carded a one-over 73 to claim medalist honors.
Tuesday's match was by invitation only. Coaches from West Valley, Eisenhower, Davis, Richland, Hanford and Sunnyside were asked bring their top prospects to the competition.
"It was sort of for the girls who have a good chance at going on to State," said Sunnyside Coach Gary Rohde.
The first year Lady Grizzly coach selected Heidi Southern and Jensie Hernandez to represent Sunnyside.
Southern toiled her way around the West Valley course with a workman-like 103. The highlight of the day for Southern came on No. 17, Apple Tree's signature hole, which features an apple-shaped island green. She cleared the water with her drive and two-putted for par.
Hernandez laid claim to a par on the finishing 18th hole, a daunting par-5 experience where golfers have to carry not only a large pond on their drive, but a babbling brook with their approach shot as well. Rohde said Hernandez reached the green in regulation and two-putted for the par. She finished her round with a 118.
The Sunnyside girls golf team closes out its regular season tomorrow (Thursday) at its home Black Rock Creek course against Wapato and Selah.
