Lady 'Hounds finish the season with loss to West Valley

WEST VALLEY - The Grandview High School fastpitch softball team played one of the better teams in the league Tuesday, and lost both games of the doubleheader to West Valley.

The Grandview girls lost the first game of the afternoon 8-4, followed by a 7-0 loss in the second game.

Despite losing both games, Grandview Head Coach Doug Hansen said the Lady 'Hounds played some of the best softball they have played all season.

Hansen said during the first game against the Rams, the Grandview girls started playing "small ball." He said in the fifth inning they had five hits, out of which three of them were either bunts or slaps. Hansen said when the Lady 'Hounds started playing small ball, the West Valley team looked like it didn't quite know how to defend it.

"It was really fun," Hansen said.

According to Hansen, although the Lady 'Hounds fell to West Valley, the Grandview team did have more hits than its opponent. The Lady 'Hounds had seven hits, to West Valley's five.

During the second game of the afternoon, it was Grandview's pitching that stood out for Hansen. He noted that pitcher Mari Cornejo had eight strikeouts against the number two team in the league.

Overall, Hansen said the Lady 'Hounds (0-14, 2-14) may have finished winless in league play, but we are "...a pretty good 0-14 team." He said to finish the season with a strong showing against West Valley showed that the Lady 'Hounds don't just roll over.
