League honors announced for local teams

Sunnyside High School boys soccer coach Juan Pineda was bestowed with one of the highest coaching honors in the league. Pineda was named the Mid-Valley League Coach of the Year this season for his efforts in guiding the Grizzlies to the State tournament.

Pineda, who is in his fourth year as head coach of the Grizzly program, has Sunnyside one game away from qualifying for the trophy round of the State soccer tournament. The former Sunnyside soccer standout also guided the Grizzlies to their first-ever Regional trophy. Sunnyside captured the Regional championship last week with a win over Cheney. The Grizzlies will play Cheney this Saturday in Sunnyside at 1:30 p.m. in a State tourney quarterfinal game for the right to move onto the semi-finals and a trophy from the State tournament. The Grizzlies currently have a 17-3 record and this marks the second consecutive year the Sunnyside soccer team has qualified for the State tournament.

Grizzly forward Junior Garcia was named the Mid-Valley League Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. He was named the Mid-Valley League player of the year his sophomore season, too.

Receiving first team league honors were Garcia, Luis Galvan and Grizzly keeper Johnny Hernandez.

Earning second team all-league honors for the Grizzly soccer team were Kyle Van de Graaf, Diego Mendoza and Silvano Ramos.

Rafa Diego and Mario de la Torre received honorable mention honors this year.

Johnson receives first team honors for Grizzly baseball

Sunnyside High School baseball catcher Michael Johnson ended his senior season on a bright note.

Johnson was named to the Mid-Valley League's first-team for the catcher position.

Receiving second team honors for Sunnyside were pitcher Micah Zakahi, outfielder Pete Marquez and shortstop Tyler Esqueda. R.J. Elizondo was afforded second team honors as a utility player.

Earning honorable mention honors were outfielders Nathan Anderson and Chris Newberry and pitcher Derek Uberuaga.

The Grizzlies ended their season with a 9-5 league record and 13-10 overall. Sunnyside was one game away from qualifying for the 3A State baseball tournament.

Two Knights receive all-league honors

The Sunnyside Christian High School baseball team had two players named to the Greater Columbia 'B' League Southern Division all-opponent team.

Knight senior Lucas Kilian was bestowed the honor, as was Chad Den Boer.

The Knights finished their season 6-6 in league play and 11-10 overall. Sunnyside Christian was one game away from qualifying for the Regional tournament.
