Durfey qualifies for two events at State

ELLENSBURG - Sunnyside swimmer Chelsea Durfey placed first in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-free this past weekend at District competition, earning berths at State.

Durfey clocked a first place time of 25.90 in the 50-free. Her sister, Rachelle Durfey, was fourth in the race with a clocking of 27.43.

In the 100-free, C. Durfey clocked a time of 56.55. Katie Knee of Sunnyside placed third with a time of 58.55.

"They did really well," said Sunnyside Coach Scott Southard. "I think almost every swim Saturday was a personal best. You can't argue with that."

Sunnyside swimmers Knee, R. Durfey, C. Durfey and Amanda Myers earned fifth place honors in the 200 medley relay. The team clocked a time of 2:08.42. Placing first was the West Valley team, which clocked a time of 1:59.51.

In the 200-free, Christina Duncan of Pullman finished in a time of 2:03.59. Sunnyside's Myers placed 14th with a clocking of 2:30.26.

Bailey Morris of Sunnyside placed 16th in the 200 individual medley with a clocking of 2:54.13, which was four seconds faster than her seed time. Selah's Bree Sutton was first with a clocking of 2:20.23.

In the 500-free Alex Prigge of Ellensburg took first place with a time of 5:40.68. Myers placed 11th with a clocking of 6:34.74.

"She dropped over 15 seconds in the 500, which is amazing," said Southard.

In the 200-free relay, Sunnyside's Knee, Myers, R. Durfey and C. Durfey brought home fourth place honors, clocking a finishing time of 1:51.80. The Pullman team was first with a clocking of 1:46.49.

100-backstroker Sutton of Selah will be competing at State in the event after clocking a first place finish of 1:01.64. Sunnyside's Knee was fifth with a clocking of 1:09.02.

In the 100-breaststroke, Sunnyside's Rachelle Durfey clocked a 10th place finish in 1:23.22. Megan Razey of Sunnyside was 14th in a time of 1:30.98. Placing first in the event was Lynsey Berfeld of West Valley, who clocked a time of 1:11.21.

In the final event of the meet, West Valley took first place honors in the 400-free relay. The team clocked a time of 3:58.37. Seventh place went to Sunnyside's Razey, Renee Saenz, Brittany Bonilla and Morris, who clocked a time of 5:16.42.

Overall, the eight Sunnyside swim team members placed fifth out of 10 teams represented at the Distict meet.

State competition will be Nov. 12 and 13 in Federal Way.
