No charges yet in shooting death

YAKIMA - No charges have been filed yet against the 14-year-old cousin of 11-year-old Nora Gonzalez, who died last week from a gunshot wound to the forehead.

Gonzalez died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle last Thursday night after allegedly being shot by her cousin earlier in the afternoon. The three teens were out of school last Thursday afternoon and were at the South Fourth Street home of the 14-year-old boy when the incident occurred. Following the gunshot wound, Gonzalez was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital and then transported to Harborview Medical Clinic.

Upon further questioning at the Sunnyside Police Department, it was discovered that Gonzalez's cousin was involved with the shooting incident.

Gonzalez's cousin had a preliminary hearing this past Friday afternoon. No charges were filed during the preliminary hearing, according to Bill Eller, Yakima County deputy prosecuting attorney.

Eller said the 14-year-old teen is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. He is currently being held on $100,000 bail at the Yakima County Juvenile Detention Center.

Eller is hoping to have enough information to make some sort of decision on what to do with Gonzalez's cousin.

"The information we have right now is very preliminary," said Eller.

The Sunnyside Police Department is currently handling the investigation into the shooting, said Eller.
