WENATCHEE - The Mabton volleyball team may have lost their first game of Regionals, ending their season, but they played tough and didn't make it easy for the opposing team.
The Lady Vikings lost to Waterville in their first match at the Regional tournament. They were defeated by scores of 27-25, 27-29, 18-25, 25-14, 10-15.
"The other team just out played us," said Mabton Coach Olivia Mendoza.
She said her team played well Saturday, covering the floor and working hard against the Waterville team. However, in the end it wasn't enough to defeat the opposing team.
"They were covering the floor and played very good defense," Mendoza said of Waterville.
Helping the Lady Vikings stay in the match was junior Michelle Tellez.
"If I could have an MVP it would go to her," Mendoza said.
She noted that Tellez was all over the court, saving balls and working hard for the Mabton team.
"She did an amazing job," Mendoza said of Tellez, who had 4 kills and 2 aces for the day.
She added that sophomore Alida Mendoza, who had 8 kills and 5 blocks, also did a great job for the Lady Vikings.
"Michelle and Alida Mendoza played their hearts out," the coach said.
Overall, Mendoza said she was happy with her team's performance Saturday.
"They fought to the end, they didn't give up," Mendoza said of the Lady Vikings.
Also playing hard for the Lady Vikes was Jessica Prieto, who finished the day with 8 kills and 2 aces, Rosa Reyna who had 5 kills and 10 aces, Josie Chase with 24 assists, and Mayra Diaz with 4 kills, 1 ace and 6 assists.
Mendoza added that Reyna did a great job at the service line for Mabton.
"Her serves were on fire," Mendoza said.
Looking back at the season, Mendoza said she is pleased with her team, noting that with the Regional tournament added to this year's schedule, her team got further into the postseason than they have in a long time.
Mendoza added that she had a wonderful group of girls to work with this year.
"They work hard and were easy to coach," she said.
