GEORGE - Jesus Garcia, 18, of Mabton died in a car accident near George this past Saturday night, Nov. 6, just after 8 p.m.
Garcia was the passenger in a 1991 Dodge Caravan driven by Agustin Enriquez, 17, of Mabton. It is believed the two young men were on their way back from a Mabton volleyball game in Wenatchee when the accident occurred.
According to the Grant County Sheriff's deputy investigating the accident, the mini van was westbound on South Frontage Road when the driver failed to negotiate the "S" curve just before the stop sign at the intersection of South Frontage and Beverly Burke roads.
Evidence shows that the driver attempted to brake, but the vehicle left the left-hand side of the roadway.
Garcia was ejected from the vehicle and the van, which rolled several times, ran over him, according to the deputy's report. The vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane of Beverly Burke Road.
Enriquez left the scene of the accident to find help. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene and Enriquez was taken to Quincy Valley Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
Deputies determined that alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the accident.
Investigators believe speed and the fact that the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt were factors in the case. The accident scene will be investigated by the Grant County traffic reconstructionist, who will determine how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time of the accident.
