FEDERAL WAY - Sunnyside High School senior Chelsea Durfey placed 13th in the 50-yard freestyle event at the State swim meet held this past weekend in Federal Way.
Durfey, the only Sunnyside swimmer to advance to State, also swam in the 100-yard freestyle event.
"She did very well," said Scott Southard, Sunnyside swim coach. "She was seeded 20th in both events and was able to qualify for the consolation finals on Saturday."
Durfey placed 13th in the 50 free with a clocking of 25.67.
"Her only faster time this season was in preliminaries when she won with a clocking of 25.66.
She placed 23rd in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.63.
"She believes in herself," said Southard, explaining why he feels she did so well.
Southard didn't let Durfey know her seed ranking in the 50-free race before she swam.
"I just told her to beat the girl in the lane next to her," said Southard. "She said she'd beat them all."
Durfey didn't finish first in the race, but did have one of her fastest times ever, which moved her on to the consolation finals, where she placed 13th.
This was Durfey's second trip to the State swimming competition. She earned a spot her sophomore year in the 50-yard freestyle event.
