Bicyclists hit by motorist

GRANGER - Two Granger teens riding tandem on a bicycle were struck by a motorist late Wednesday afternoon.

Yesterday's accident occurred at near-dark, about 4:45 p.m., on Yakima Valley Highway near the Schneider Lane intersection.

Both the bicyclists and the motorist were eastbound on Yakima Valley Highway. Washington State Patrol troopers report that the operator of the bike, 18-year-old Everardo Montano, darted from the shoulder of the roadway into the eastbound lane. He and the passenger on the bike, 17-year-old Rogelio Chavez, were struck from behind by a 1995 Dodge Stratus, driven by Josefina Cortez, 52, of Grandview.

The two teens both suffered injuries as a result of the collision. Chavez was transported by ambulance to Yakima Regional Hospital. Montano was taken to an undisclosed medical center by a private party. Neither of the teens were wearing protective helmets, said WSP troopers.

The driver of the car was uninjured. Her vehicle reportedly sustained about $800 worth of damage.
