Shooting suspect released on bail

The Sunnyside teen involved in the Oct. 28 shooting death of his 11-year-old cousin made bail yesterday.

The 14-year-old was released from the Yakima County Juvenile Detention Center Thursday on $10,000 bail, according to Yakima County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Bill Eller.

The Sunnyside teen had been in custody in Yakima since being involved in an Oct. 28 shooting, which left 11-year-old Nora Gonzalez of Sunnyside dead. The teen is believed to have shot his cousin in the forehead.

During a pre-trial hearing this past Wednesday, prosecutors had recommended that the teen remain in custody until his Dec. 8 trial because of a perceived threat the teen was to others due to a lack of supervision at home.

At the Dec. 8 trial, the Sunnyside teen faces first degree manslaughter, firearm enhancement and second degree unlawful possession of firearm charges in connection with the death of Gonzalez.
