Sunnyside School Board Briefs

Committee appointed to name new school

The Sunnyside School Board Monday night approved the formation of a committee charged with naming the new middle school set to be constructed next year.

The board also approved the appointment of committee members.

Stan Davis is chairman of the committee. Davis is overseeing the construction of the new middle school for the district.

Mike Miller, Frank Sandoval and Suzie Zamarron will serve as the community representatives on the committee. Cathy Cullen and Raul Castro are the school district staff representatives. Harrison Middle School Principal Janie Hernandez and Chief Kamiakin Elementary School Principal Julie Schmick will serve as the administrative representatives. The committee will also be comprised of two fifth grade students.

"We will seek a lot of community support," said Davis.

Davis said he expects the process of naming the new middle school to take between three and four months.

Davis said in the near future there will be ballots available for people to write their suggestions for the name of the new school.

Board declares position vacant

The Sunnyside School Board Monday night formally declared school director position number four vacant following the death of Fred Kilian.

Kilian died Saturday, Nov. 20, following a long battle with diabetes. Kilian had served on the school board since 1981.

"We will miss Fred Kilian as a board member," said Sunnyside School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Cole.

The school board now has 90 days to fill the vacant position.

The district will be accepting letters of interest for the director's spot until Friday, Jan. 14.

Those applying must reside within the boundaries of Kilian's district, which is generally the Outlook area.
