Committee appointed to name new school
The Sunnyside School Board Monday night approved the
formation of a committee charged with naming the new middle school set to be
constructed next year.
The board also approved the appointment of committee
Stan Davis is chairman of the committee. Davis is overseeing
the construction of the new middle school for the district.
Mike Miller, Frank Sandoval and Suzie Zamarron will serve as
the community representatives on the committee. Cathy Cullen and Raul Castro
are the school district staff representatives. Harrison Middle School Principal
Janie Hernandez and Chief Kamiakin Elementary School Principal Julie Schmick
will serve as the administrative representatives. The committee will also be
comprised of two fifth grade students.
"We will seek a lot of community support," said
Davis said he expects the process of naming the new middle
school to take between three and four months.
Davis said in the near future there will be ballots
available for people to write their suggestions for the name of the new school.
Board declares position vacant
The Sunnyside School Board Monday night formally declared
school director position number four vacant following the death of Fred Kilian.
Kilian died Saturday, Nov. 20, following a long battle with
diabetes. Kilian had served on the school board since 1981.
"We will miss Fred Kilian as a board member," said
Sunnyside School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Cole.
The school board now has 90 days to fill the vacant
The district will be accepting letters of interest for the
director's spot until Friday, Jan. 14.
Those applying must reside within the boundaries of Kilian's
district, which is generally the Outlook area.
