Bickleton runners slowed by hot Royal courses

ROYAL CITY - A long, grueling sloped hill in Royal City proved awfully tough for the Bickleton boys cross country team Thursday afternoon. Only Bickleton Pirate Cody Loomis finished in the top 20 runners. Loomis, a freshman, completed the 2.9 mile-long course in a time of 20:19.

Royal's Rigoberto Jiminez set a course record with a 17:00 clocking to claim first place honors in the five-school meet.

Jiminez's twin brother, Humberto, was right behind him for second place honors with a time of 17:21.

Bickleton's lone female runner finished in 18th place with a time of 27:56, well behind the girls' leader, Adriana Mendoza of Zillah High School. Mendoza completed the course in a time of 20:23, according to Bickleton Coach Darrell Lang.

The Zillah girls team, who won first place team honors, is ranked first in state for A-B teams, Lang said. The Zillah boys team won top honors at the meet.

Setting personal best times on the two-mile course were Bickleton's Jonny Freeman, in 31st place with a time of 23:27, who was closely followed by senior Bryan Whitmore, in 32nd place, with a time of 23:37. Orion Yoesle was a bit further behind his Bickleton teammates in 35th place with a time of 24:47.

'"We're off to Pasco this Saturday for the Big Cross in Pasco," said Lang. Only Loomis, a freshman who competes in high school rodeo, will be absent.

"At 130 pounds Loomis, a bullrider, will be competing in the state high school rodeo finals," Lang said.
