RICHLAND - Sunnyside High School senior Brenden Scott stayed within a minute of the leaders at this past Saturday's 36th annual Richland Cross Country Invitational.
Scott toured the three-mile course, set up at Carmichael Junior High School, in 16 minutes and 43 seconds.
The boys race winner, Laef Barnes of Spokane's Mead High School, clocked a 15:49.
Sunnyside didn't field a complete team at the invite. Mead High School won the boys team title.
Sunnyside also had three other runners in the varsity boys race. Cipriano Meraz, a senior, placed 121st from the 159-person field in a time of 18:18. Sophomore Sterling Scott placed 143rd with a clocking of 19:08, and Grizzly teammate Joel Gaspar, a junior, finished in 19:17 for a 145th place finish.
In the invite's JV boys race, which included 181 runners, Sunnyside sophomore Dane Schmick placed 171st in a time of 24:07. Senior David Palmer of Mead won the JV race with a 16:46 clocking. Sunnyside's Lance Warner, a junior, clocked a 26:23 for 176th place honors, and Grizzly teammate Kevin Lick, a senior, was 177th (26:24).
Sunnyside had one competitor in the freshman boys race. Matthew Santoy hit the finish line, which included 91 competitors, in 21:11 to record a 61st place finish. Kelly Lynch of Mead won the freshman race in a time of 17:15.
Sunnyside didn't enter any runners in the varsity girls race. In the JV girls race, Lady Grizzly sophomore Erica Rodriguez had the top finish, placing 47th in a time of 24:14. Paige Pearson of Mead won the JV girls race with a 21:33 clocking. Sunnyside's Christina Fuller placed 86th (27:10) and Veronica Almeida was 87th (27:11).
